From Computer Vision to Understanding the Individual Horse

Just two weeks ago, we celebrated reaching 35 million structured, machine-readable data points.

Today, that number has already grown to more than 51.4 million.

The number itself is exciting.

But what excites us far more is what those millions of real-world data points are now allowing us to build.

Because over the past few months, something important has changed.

Not just our technology.

Our understanding.

We thought horse management was enough.

When Equiyd began, our vision was to create a better way for owners to manage their horses.

A connected digital record.

One place for care history, training, competitions, providers and everything that follows a horse throughout its life.

That alone represented a significant step forward for the industry.

But as our community grew, so did the opportunities.

The structured data being created every day opened the door to something much bigger.

Then we built AI.

The next evolution was AI Riding Analysis.

Using Computer Vision, riders could upload a simple video and receive objective analysis of horse and rider movement.

It was a huge step forward.

For the first time, riders could access technology that previously required specialist equipment or laboratory environments.

But as more riders used it, something became clear.

Computer Vision wasn't wrong.

It just couldn't tell the whole story.

A camera can only interpret what it can see.

It can't feel acceleration.

It can't measure the forces travelling through horse and rider.

It can't understand everything happening between the frames.

Rather than seeing that as a limitation...

...we saw it as our next opportunity.

So we built telemetry.

That decision led to Equiyd Capture.

Instead of relying solely on video, we began combining what the camera sees with what sensors feel.

Your phone became a sensor.

Your smartwatch could become a sensor.

Additional Bluetooth telemetry sensors could be added where even greater detail was needed.

Suddenly we weren't just analysing movement.

We were measuring it.

But once again...

Our community helped us realise something else.

There is no such thing as an average horse.

One of the biggest lessons we've learnt is that horses shouldn't be compared against a mythical "perfect" horse.

Every horse moves differently.

Every horse has its own rhythm.

Its own symmetry.

Its own way of pushing from behind.

Its own way of travelling on the left rein compared with the right.

Its own normal.

And that changes everything.

Because the future isn't teaching AI what an average horse looks like.

The future is teaching AI what your horse looks like on a good day.

Only then can it begin recognising when something starts to drift away from that normal.

That isn't a diagnosis.

It never replaces the experience of riders, coaches or veterinarians.

It provides another piece of objective information that may help identify subtle changes earlier, while they are still small enough to understand and investigate.
